约翰·R·塞尔，1932年出生，1959年于牛津大学获哲学博士学位，现为加利福尼亚大学伯克莱分校米尔斯心灵与语言哲学教授。主要著作有《言语行为》、《意向性》、《心灵、语言与社会》等。他坚持实在论的观点，发展了“意向性”概念与“意识”理论，对唯物论与二元论都有批评。因为在心灵哲学与语言哲学上卓有建树，1977年当选为美国艺术与科学院院士，2004年获美国人文科学奖章。
